With volunteer training coming to an end anticipation is high for surveys to begin. The aim is to conduct baseline surveys with the help of local marine park staff, at a site that was unable to be surveyed last phase due to poor weather. The collaboration with local marine staff is expected to be a relationship that benefits both parties. This is in terms of the help that frontier receives from their participation and the useful survey and ID techniques that Frontier staff are able to teach them in return.

Frontier Tanzania is also in the process of putting together a booklet on the mafia island hippo population which will be distributed to locals. The hope is that this will both educate and promote tourism in local communities across Mafia Island. The recent visit to the district council of Millimani by Frontier Tanzania, concerning the proposed distribution of hippo booklets, was also received very positively.

With all these exciting developments, there has never been a better time to get involved with Frontier’s Tanzania Marine Conservation and Diving Project.
