It’s an exciting time to be with the Frontier Tanzania marine project at the moment! Not only have surveys began, part of the population of hippos on Mafia Island have been observed by the team and they have also seen more than 15 whale sharks cruising around at the same time!

The whale shark is one of only 3 filter feeder shark species (the other 2 being the basking shark and megamouth) and is also the largest measuring up to 12m! Not a lot is known about this beautiful shark’s life history however, a female specimen caught contained over 300 foetuses! They are a cosmopolitan species and normally solitary, so this sighting is even more exciting!

With all this going on, I think it’s time to check out our Tanzania Marine Conservation & Diving don’t you?
