The first update, courtesy of Anna, from a group of ten volunteers who headed to Nairobi for a fortnight for a combination of teaching, community development and cultural immersion:
We arrived safely on Friday morning after a long flight and we straight away settled into the hostel and explored the surrounding area. We are staying in very basic accommodation but the lovely people and community spirit make up for the lack of luxuries and sporadic water supply!
On Sunday we had a great day visiting baby elephants and going to a giraffe sanctuary. We also experienced some traditional African dance and learnt some history of ancient Kenyan tribes.
Monday was an extremely overwhelming and awe-inspiring day as we visited the school and orphanage we will be volunteering in for the rest of our stay. The excitement of the children and teachers for our arrival was shocking and extremely welcoming! The kids were all happy and confident in meeting us. We were all shocked and appalled by the poor standards of the facilities they are forced to use and are therefore inspired to help as much as we can, both while volunteering here and fundraising at home. The happiness that we brought to the kids by just visiting for a few hours was overwhelming and truly shows how with a sense of community and people caring, anyone can be happy.
