WHAT DOES THE PROJECT DO?
Volunteers will be given the opportunity to work within print media as an exchange journalist in Nepal. You will be writing for a local tourist newspaper, which has a focus on promoting tourism within the country. You will be involved in the general administration of the newspaper as well as the opportunity to contribute to destination reports around Nepal. This is a chance to immerse yourself in a new and different community. Rather than just being a detached tourist, you are subscribing to an ethos that is beneficial to the culture that you are spending time in.
Volunteers will be provided with some basic journalism and photography training by an experienced member of staff, so that you leave Nepal not only having had the experience of a lifetime but with new skills, improved employment prospects, as well as becoming a more well-rounded individual.
WHAT WILL I BE DOING?
Depending upon your previous experience and skills you will be placed either with a Nepali- or English-language newspaper based in Kathmandu. You may be involved in a range of activities, from attending press conferences, writing news articles and taking photos to destination reporting, attending interaction programmes about contemporary journalism in Nepal, writing for a blog and more. Your involvement will depend upon your own skills and interests as well as what is needed at the time of your placement.
You will be encouraged to bring your own creativity, perspective and skills to the articles you contribute to, whilst also constantly learning from professionals working alongside you. If you are interested in a particular element of working on the paper do let us know and we will endeavour to ensure you are involved in this area at some point during your internship. All this, whilst you discover more about this magical destination and its people through your work and research on the project.
All volunteers are required to submit an up-to-date CV as all placements are dependant upon the acceptance of the newspaper/magazine.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN I ARRIVE?
You will be collected upon arrival at Kathmandu Airport on the Sunday by a friendly local staff member and transported to your accommodation. Once you have had time to rest the local staff will introduce you to your project and the local area. Your in-country coordinator will be more than happy to help you settle in and acclimatise and you'll feel at home in no time in this friendly, vibrant country.
WHERE WILL I BE STAYING?
During this project there may be a number of different accommodation options, either in a volunteer guesthouse or a clean and welcoming homestay with a carefully chosen host. Wherever you stay you'll be a member of the family, and your hosts will work hard to make you feel as such.
WHAT WILL I BE EATING?
You will be provided with 2 meals a day whilst staying at the Volunteer house in Kathmandu. For lunch volunteers usually eat out, with colleagues or at the projects themselves as they are away from the volunteer house. There are a wide variety of cusines available in Kathmandu, both Western and Nepalese. The most prevalent Nepali dish is daal, bhaat and tarkaari (lentils, rice and vegetable curry). This is the main course served in most Nepalese houses for both lunch and dinner. Nepali food is much less spicy than Indian food, and many dishes are Tibetan in origin. It seems that Indian influence is only confined to south-western part of Nepal. The rest of Nepal has more of Tibetan and Chinese influence in their cuisines.
Two of the most exclusive and authentic Nepalese delicacies include momos, a meat or vegetable filled dumpling and Tibetan bread and honey – a puffy fried bread with heavy raw honey. Both of these items are good for a light breakfast but are insufficient for a full meal. The Newars of Nepal are considered to be great connoisseurs, so watch out for Newari restaurants for a special Nepalese gastronomic experience!

ADDITIONAL OPPORTUNITIES
In your free time you can explore the amazing city of Kathmandu and visit the many spiritual temples and palaces. Perhaps you could visit the many markets and shops or even try some of the local delicacies sold throughout the city.
As well as traditional Nepalese foods, the city also offers modern bakeries and upmarket restaurants. You may also wish to visit some of the picturesque villages on the outskirts of the city if you fancy a break from the hustle and bustle!
Why not take a fun ride on the local bus to go white water rafting. After your project you may wish to spend a couple of weeks trekking in the Himalayas or Annapurna Ranges or wildlife spotting in Chitwan National Park.
