WHAT DOES THE PROJECT DO?

Frontier was established in 1989 and is a non-profit conservation and development non-governmental organisation (NGO) dedicated to safeguarding biodiversity and ecosystem integrity and building sustainable livelihoods for marginalised communities in the world's poorest countries. The early projects were located in Tanzania, one of the world's poorest countries, where field teams carried out groundbreaking surveys in remote forest, savannah, and marine environments building a comprehensive picture of areas of international importance for biodiversity conservation.  

Originally focused largely on scientific and conservation research, Frontier's mandate rapidly evolved to encompass community development, capacity building, ecosystem protection, sustainable economic growth, and the development of civil society. This reflected a fundamental belief that the only way to create a mutually-beneficial relationship between man and the environment is to address both human and environmental needs. Today, Frontier projects run the gamut of community development, educational, wildlife rescue and rehabilitation, humanitarian and research and conservation projects in 50 different countries worldwide. The holistic approach originally pioneered by Frontier has subsequently been adopted as an example of best practice by conservation workers and development professionals in government agencies and NGOs worldwide.

Today Frontier continues to operate over 300 volunteering projects worldwide, making a positive impact upon thousands of local communities and conserving the world's most endangered species.

WHAT WILL I BE DOING?

Throughout the duration of your internship you will be based at our head offices in London, helping to support our ongoing work. There are two internship schemes available and all placements will be dependent upon your own previous skills and experience as well as the prior approval of your most up-to-date CV.  

Internship placements available:

• Media, Marketing and Online Journalism
• Conservation & Research
• Overseas Operational Support

The kinds of activities that you may find yourself involved in include (but are not limited to); writing articles for a wide range of social and published media, carrying out vox-pops interviews, video editing, events management, coordinating field re-supply or even amalgamating scientific data to produce reports.  You will be involved within a wide range of activities supporting the continuation of our worldwide volunteering programmes, allowing you to develop your own transferable skills and experience within a UK-based international non-profit organisation, whilst fully immersing yourself within London life.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN I ARRIVE?

You will be met upon arrival at Heathrow airport by a friendly staff member from Frontier and taken to your accommodation via public transport. Please aim to arrive on the first Monday of the month between the hours of 10am-3pm. The following day you will report to the Frontier head office for 10am where the local staff will introduce you to your project and the local area. Your project coordinator will be more than happy to help you settle in and acclimatise so that you will feel at home in no time!

WHERE WILL I BE STAYING?

You will be staying in a popular, vibrant hostel throughout the duration of your placement.  Rooms will be dormitory style shared accommodation and most of all clean and comfortable with access to all modern facilities and amenities in the centre of London. This is the perfect opportunity to get to know other fellow travellers and build the kind of friendships and experiences that stay with you for life. Please talk to a travel advisor if you would like to make your own arrangements for your accommodation.

WHAT WILL I BE EATING?

A great aspect of this amazing project is that it is self-catering. This is a fun element of travelling away from home as it gives you that added freedom and is a good opportunity to bond with fellow travellers while exploring local restaurants and market stalls!  Like any global city, London is a melting pot for an incredible variety of cuisines. From the quirky to the traditional you will have no problem finding places to suit your taste, you might even stumble upon some new ones of your own!  Whether you’re after the traditional fish and chips, sophisticated Georgian tea rooms or the trendy café bars of Shoreditch, you’ll find everything within easy access. Why not wonder down to China town in Soho, or sample the street food on Brick Lane, it could all be in a days work for you throughout this incredible internship!

In your spare time the city is all yours! London is a global city of many worlds, but still quintessentially British with black cabs and big red buses, tea rooms and pubs. Effortlessly go from chic European eateries and markets to bustling after dark cutting edge clubs. Steeped in history, London still possesses the narrow alleys and winding streets that gives it so much unique character. Spend a day cycling between the many free galleries and museums, stop off at Covent Garden to grab some fresh deli food and peruse the market stalls or catch a show in the West End. During your evenings why not take a stroll down the south bank and take in the famous skyline of the London eye or end your evening by heading out to any one of the live music venues or cocktail bars.  

If you are keen to venture further a field your in-country project coordinator will be more than happy to help advise you on how best to take a trip to the seaside to check out Brighton pier, visit William Shakespeare’s birthplace, the enigmatic Stratford-upon-Avon or even take on a bigger challenge by taking a hike in the beautiful Lake District!  Whatever your desire, get ready to fall in love with quaint old England.
